Unpredictable Paths
“When I couldn’t make my dreams into reality, I found other dreams.”
—The Cistern Chronicles, Chapter 15, verse 20
‘Unpredictable Paths’ is a work of historical fiction that sees into the future, spanning millenia. From ancient Rome to the twenty fourth century, this tale tells of the struggles, beliefs, and loves of four individuals whose lives intersect.
Cassandra, who rises from an obscure and sketchy background to be a pragmatic and skeptical counselor to a Roman Emperor; Karen, a physician in the 21st century from a background of little means expanding her personal and professional horizons; Magdalene, an archaeologist in the oppressive 24th century who discovers ancient writings that may shake the political landscape; and Jenny, an engineer in the famine-ridden 24th century using the efficiency of engineering science to battle the problem of world-wide food shortages.
Can each succeed without the others? Will Cassandra be able to spread her message? Will Magdalene use her archaeological find before the Church can co-opt it? Will Jenny and her team solve the problem of famine?
How long can prominence be delayed? Can we discover and treasure what is important? At what cost?
